The Setup: A Historic Race to Perfection

The 2004 simulated campaign was defined by an unprecedented concentration of power at the top of the league. Multiple franchises dominated their schedules from start to finish, creating a high-stakes collision course for January:

The Cover Athlete & NFC Elite:

With Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens gracing the cover of ESPN NFL 2K5, the virtual 2004 campaign featured a historic run from his squad. Andy Reid earned Coach of the Year honors by guiding the Eagles to a near-flawless 15-1 regular season thanks to the electric duo of QB Donovan McNabb and Owens. Their biggest threat came from the Atlanta Falcons, led by QB Michael Vick, who steamrolled the NFC South to finish 14-2.

The AFC Powerhouses:

The Pittsburgh Steelers leaned on Offensive Rookie of the Year Ben Roethlisberger and RB Jerome Bettis to secure the AFC's top seed with a towering 15-1 record. Right behind them, the defending champion New England Patriots matched their 15-1 pace. Meanwhile, Peyton Manning captured both League MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors by conducting a masterful Indianapolis Colts offense to a 14-2 finish.

The Postseason: Identical Dominance

The playoffs opened with a mix of gritty road upsets and intense divisional rivalries before culminating in one of the most bizarre coincidences in virtual NFL history:

Wild Card Upsets:

In the AFC, the #5 seed New York Jets went on the road and upset the #4 seed Kansas City Chiefs 28-14 behind a strong running game from Curtis Martin, while the #3 seed Colts knocked off the #6 seed Denver Broncos 31-14 in the RCA Dome.

Over in the NFC, the #4 seed St. Louis Rams (led by Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk) knocked off the #5 seed Carolina Panthers, while the #6 seed Minnesota Vikings upset the #3 seed Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The Vikings' win was highlighted by WR Randy Moss catching a game-winning touchdown early in the 4th quarter—and drawing intense criticism for his infamous pretend-mooning celebration.
