The 2005 Madden NFL 06 Season: The Road Warriors Ride "The Bus"
The Setup: MVP Dominance and Top-Tier Heavyweights
The 2005 campaign saw elite talent rise to the surface, creating several dominant division champions across both conferences, while a real-world tragedy brought unprecedented adversity to the league:
The Shaun Alexander Show:
Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander swept both League MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors, powering Seattle to a conference-best 14-2 record and the NFC’s #1 seed.
The 15–1 Colts & AFC Giants:
In the AFC, Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts ran roughshod over the competition, cruising to a league-best 15-1 mark. Hot on their heels were the Denver Broncos (14-2) and the defending champion New England Patriots (13-3).
Monsters of the Midway:
In Chicago, Coach of the Year Lovie Smith and Defensive Player of the Year Brian Urlacher resurrected a suffocating defensive identity, leading the Bears to an impressive 13-3 finish.
The Saints' Resilience:
Following the devastating landfall of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, the New Orleans Saints were forced to relocate. They split their season between the Alamodome in San Antonio and LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, even playing their first "home" game at Giants Stadium against the New York Giants in Week 2.
The Looming #4 Seed:
Quietly lurking behind the AFC’s 13-to-15-win powerhouses were the 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers, who claimed the AFC North crown and entered the postseason with momentum and a burning desire to avenge their loss in the previous season's AFC Championship Game.
The Postseason: A Historic Gauntlet
The playoffs quickly turned into a stage for road shockers and defensive standoffs:
Wild Card Statements:
In the AFC, the #3 seed New England Patriots defeated the #6 Kansas City Chiefs 35-17 at Gillette Stadium, while the #4 seed Pittsburgh Steelers began their redemption tour by knocking off the #5 seed Jacksonville Jaguars behind a strong running game from Jerome Bettis.
Over in the NFC, the #6 seed Atlanta Falcons upset the #3 seed Tampa Bay Buccaneers 22-15. Meanwhile, the #4 seed Philadelphia Eagles—led by Madden NFL 06 cover athlete Donovan McNabb—demolished their division rival #5 seed Dallas Cowboys behind strong performances from McNabb and wide receivers Reggie Brown and Freddie Mitchell.
The Shootout in Indy & Defensive Dogfights:
The Divisional Round brought immediate fireworks. The Steelers walked into the RCA Dome and shocked the top-seeded 15-1 Indianapolis Colts in an explosive 47-33 offensive shootout. Meanwhile, the #2 seed Denver Broncos outlasted the defending champion New England Patriots 27-24 at Mile High Stadium.
In the NFC, the #1 seed Seattle Seahawks took down the Atlanta Falcons 37-16, and the Philadelphia Eagles went on the road to upset the #2 seed Chicago Bears 24-16.
Championship Sunday: In the AFC Championship, Pittsburgh proved their road resilience was no fluke, going into Mile High Stadium and taking down the Denver Broncos 31-21.
In the NFC Championship, Shaun Alexander and the top-seeded Seattle Seahawks survived a gritty 13-10 defensive brawl against the Philadelphia Eagles to reach the final stage.
Super Bowl 40: The Fairytale Finish in Detroit
Super Bowl 40 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, brought together the explosive NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks and the relentless AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. In a grueling, physical defensive battle where points were hard to come by, Pittsburgh leaned heavily on veteran running back Jerome "The Bus" Bettis.
Bettis delivered clutch, clock-draining drives in his hometown, capturing Super Bowl MVP honors as the Steelers capped off their legendary postseason road journey with a 15-7 victory.
Shortly after hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, Bettis announced his retirement, riding off into the sunset as a champion.
