One of my favorite cartoon characters after I graduated from high school in 2007 was Cosmo the Seedrian, a character that appeared in the third and final season of the anime, Sonic X. To give a little backstory, Cosmo was the last of an alien species called Seedrians who joined forces with Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends to battle an alien race known as the Metarex that were planning to rule the galaxy according to their own beliefs.

Now, Cosmo of course is known in the Sonic Community for her romance with Miles “Tails” Prower, although she did form close bonds with other characters like Amy Rose the Hedgehog and Cream the Rabbit for example.

But in terms of how I view Cosmo in the Autism/Neurodiversity community is that she does display traits of autism in the manner of her character. She does display traits that can be very common amongst autistic/neurodiverse individuals:

1. Prone to Meltdowns

One thing that Cosmo does that is common among autistic/neurodiverse individuals is that she is prone to crying frequently and having meltdowns. This is largely because her entire family was murdered by the Metarex, led by Dark Oak (who was later revealed to be her father, Lucas the Seedrian). Most neurodiverse individuals will have sensory overloads and meltdowns for a variety of reasons. Yes, Cosmo’s family was murdered, but when she cries, no matter what the reason it’s for a good reason.

2. Clumsy:

The other trait that Cosmo displays that is also among autistic/neurodiverse individuals is that while she is willing to help her friends, she does have a clumsy nature to her character. For one thing, Cosmo cannot lift heavy objects as demonstrated in the pictures above, although she does try. It can also be that she is physically weak in which some individuals who have a disability that prevents them from carrying heavy objects, even though they may seem like they can at times from the point of view of another person.

3. Lack of Self-Awareness:

The next trait that Cosmo displays is that she does display a lack of self-awareness at times. Sometimes Cosmo is so focused on the mission at hand that she doesn’t take notice of the simple pitfalls that are in the way of her and her friends. This is demonstrated in the episode “Desperately Seeking Sonic” where she ends up in certain situations such as her skirt getting caught on a tree branch.

4. She has a strong bond with her family

The final trait that Cosmo displays is the fact that she has a very strong bond with her family, particularly her sister Galaxina. It can also be implied that this is also that Galaxina raised Cosmo along with the other Seedrians that were with them after her mother, Earthia, transformed into a tree.

For most autistic/neurodiverse individuals, being attached to family members can be both a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. We build such a strong bond with our families that we want to keep them in our lives forever and when that family member or significant other either dies or leaves us temporarily, it can have a lasting impact because of our autistic/neurodiverse traits.

In conclusion, Cosmo is a character that I have personally connected with because she is sort of like me in a way: we are prone to meltdowns or sensory overloads, we are good natured, and we sometimes have a lack of self-awareness that can get us into trouble.

Yes, it did suck that she gave her earthly life up to defeat the Metarex for good, but I promise you that as a fanfiction writer, I will bring her back to life because Cosmo has a ton of potential not just for herself but for the Sonic franchise as a whole.

At the time of this blog, I am currently planning a fanfiction where Cosmo and her whole family comes back from the dead scheduled for publication sometimes in early 2022. So, stay tuned!!!

Catch you all later!!
