The 2022 Madden NFL 23 Season: The Year of the #3 Seeds
The Setup: The 16–1 Juggernauts & MVP Josh Allen
Following the real-life passing of the legendary John Madden in December 2021, Madden NFL 23 honored its namesake by placing Coach Madden himself on the cover across all editions. On the virtual gridiron, the 2022 regular season was dominated by overwhelming favorites and record-setting individual performances across both conferences:
The 16–1 Leaders:
The Green Bay Packers seized the NFC's top seed with a near-flawless 16-1 record. In the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs mirrored that exact 16-1 dominance to lock down the #1 seed.
Allen's MVP Campaign:
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was an unstoppable dual-threat force, capturing both League MVP and AFC Offensive Player of the Year honors while leading Buffalo to a spectacular 15-2 record.
The NFC East Bloodbath:
The Dallas Cowboys surged to a 15-2 finish to win the division, but the Philadelphia Eagles (12-5) and New York Giants (10-7) proved the division was a grueling gauntlet, with all three teams ultimately making the postseason.
Brady's Final Run in Tampa:
Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers captured the NFC South crown as the #4 seed, but their championship aspirations came to an abrupt halt in a one-and-done Wild Card exit against the San Francisco 49ers.
Damar Hamlin's Near-Death Experience: The virtual season mirrored one of the most frightening real-world moments in league history. During the Bills' Week 17 matchup against the Bengals, Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field in Cincinnati from cardiac arrest.
After receiving life-saving medical attention on the turf, he was rushed to a Cincinnati-area hospital in critical condition, prompting the NFL to suspend the game with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter. The terrifying incident united the entire football world in support of his miraculous recovery.
The Postseason: 50-Point Explosions & Divisional Round Chaos
While the top seeds looked invincible in the regular season, the playoffs brought absolute offensive bedlam and historic upsets:
Wild Card Action:
Starting in the AFC, the #2 seed Buffalo Bills overpowered the #7 seed Cleveland Browns 38-24. The #3 seed Cincinnati Bengals crushed the #6 seed Miami Dolphins 49-14 for their first playoff win since 1991. Finally, Lamar Jackson led the #5 seed Baltimore Ravens over Trevor Lawrence and the #4 seed Jacksonville Jaguars 35-14.
In the NFC, the #2 seed Dallas Cowboys knocked off their division rival #7 seed New York Giants 38-27 at AT&T Stadium. The #3 seed Los Angeles Rams defended SoFi Stadium with a 42-21 win over the #6 seed Philadelphia Eagles, and the #5 seed San Francisco 49ers put an end to Tom Brady's remarkable Hall of Fame career with a 42-24 win over the #4 seed Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 50-Point Club:
Defense became an afterthought in the Divisional playoffs.
In the NFC, the #5 seed San Francisco 49ers stunned the #1 seed Green Bay Packers in an incredible 52-45 shootout at Lambeau Field. The most shocking result of the weekend, however, belonged to the #3 seed Los Angeles Rams. Traveling to face the #2 seed Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles made a historically dominant statement by obliterating Dallas 56-3.
Over in the AFC, the #3 seed Cincinnati Bengals went into Buffalo and eliminated MVP Josh Allen and the #2 seed Buffalo Bills with a staggering 56-27 blowout, reaching the AFC Championship for the first time since 1988. The only game that wasn't a 50-point barrage saw Patrick Mahomes and the #1 seed Kansas City Chiefs outduel the #5 seed Baltimore Ravens 31-27.
Championship Sunday:
The #3 seeds kept their momentum rolling.
In the AFC Championship, Joe Burrow and the #3 seed Cincinnati Bengals went into Arrowhead Stadium and took down the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs 42-28.
In the NFC Championship, the #3 seed Los Angeles Rams ended the #5 seed San Francisco 49ers' Cinderella run with a decisive 49-21 victory at SoFi Stadium.
Super Bowl 57: Stafford Delivers the Crown to Hollywood
After navigating a bracket filled with heavyweights, Super Bowl 57 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, became a rare battle between two #3 seeds: the AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals and the NFC Champion Los Angeles Rams. In a tense, hard-fought matchup that echoed real-world history, the defenses finally stepped up.
The Rams managed to edge out Joe Burrow and the Bengals 27-24 in the closing moments. Quarterback Matthew Stafford orchestrated the critical scoring drives under immense pressure, earning Super Bowl MVP honors and securing a Hollywood ending for the championship.
