The Setup: The 16–1 Titans Rule the Regular Season
The 2021 season was defined by unmatched dominance at the very top, as both conference #1 seeds—led by the game's two cover athletes—coasted through nearly flawless campaigns during the NFL's newly expanded 17-game schedule:
The Cover Stars & 16–1 Heavyweights:
Tom Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an elite 16-1 record to claim the NFC’s top spot, capturing both League MVP and NFC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Across the conference, San Francisco matched their win total at 15-2. In the AFC, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs matched Tampa Bay's dominance, rolling to a 16-1 record and the AFC's #1 seed.
The Buffalo & Jacksonville Surge:
The Buffalo Bills put together a stellar 15-2 campaign to claim the AFC East. Meanwhile, Coach of the Year Doug Pederson worked wonders with the Jacksonville Jaguars, guiding them to a brilliant 13-4 record and the AFC South crown behind Offensive Rookie of the Year Trevor Lawrence.
The Postseason: Dominance on Championship Sunday
The playoffs quickly evolved into a showcase of the league's elite heavyweights, setting up a clash of titans for the championship:
Wild Card Thrillers & Droughts Broken:
The AFC Wild Card Round began with QB Josh Allen and the #2 seed Buffalo Bills winning their first playoff game since 1995 with a 38-30 victory over the #7 seed Indianapolis Colts. The #5 seed Cleveland Browns, guided by QB Baker Mayfield, won their first playoff game since 1994 with an upset victory over their AFC North rivals, the #4 seed Baltimore Ravens, 35-24. Meanwhile, #1 overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence helped guide the #3 seed Jacksonville Jaguars to a nail-biting 20-19 win over the #6 seed Miami Dolphins.
In the NFC, the #6 seed Los Angeles Rams, under new QB Matthew Stafford, went into Green Bay and shocked Aaron Rodgers and the #3 seed Green Bay Packers 45-35. The #4 seed Dallas Cowboys knocked off the #5 seed Seattle Seahawks 35-21, and the #2 seed San Francisco 49ers ran over the #7 seed Chicago Bears 31-17, highlighted by an explosive 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by 49ers wide receiver Richie James.
The Divisional Blowouts:

In the AFC Divisional Round, Patrick Mahomes and the #1 seed Kansas City Chiefs continued their quest for a Super Bowl three-peat by taking down the #5 seed Cleveland Browns 28-17, while the #2 seed Buffalo Bills crushed the #3 seed Jacksonville Jaguars 47-18.
Championship Sunday Statements:
Both conference title games turned into emphatic blowouts.
In the NFC Championship, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dismantled the San Francisco 49ers 42-3.
In the AFC Championship, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs handled the Buffalo Bills 42-14, setting up an ultimate showdown between the game's two cover athletes.
Super Bowl 56: Brady Claims the Crown in Los Angeles
Super Bowl 56 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, brought together the two Madden NFL 22 cover stars: Tom Brady’s NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes’ AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
While anticipation for a high-scoring shootout was high, Tampa Bay's defense and surgical execution completely dictated the game. Tom Brady threw for key scores and controlled the clock, earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the Buccaneers secured a resounding 31-10 victory over the Chiefs. The win allowed Tampa Bay to hoist the Lombardi Trophy and decisively denied Kansas City's attempt at a legendary Super Bowl three-peat.
