Two blogs ago, I discussed why the Council for Exceptional Children is the perfect organization to act as my laboratory for my educational presentations. Now, for this blog, I want to discuss about the organization where I choose to practice my employment presentations on…the Society for Human Resources Management or SHRM.
…
As part of the alpha triangle for “Going the Distance,” Employment is meant to reach out to not just businesses and companies, but in particular the human resources divisions of businesses and corporations, since they are the departments responsible for the well-being of workforces and ensuring said workforces get paid on time.
But part of the reason why I choose to focus on SHRM mostly is because human resource divisions are essentially backbone when it comes to hiring neurodiverse/disabled individuals. Human Resource Divisions along with the companies that they work need to hear neurodiverse and disabled voices like myself tell our stories about obtaining and holding onto a job.
Unfortunately, as I have said many times in the past, a lot of companies have been turning a back hand to neurodiverse/disabled individuals on account that they are viewed more as a liability rather than an ability.
Of course, I’ve been blessed to have a day job with a supermarket chain that not only gave me a chance to show what I can do week in and week out, but also gave me the flexibility to run “Going the Distance” the way that I want to run it.
I’ve also had the opportunity to build relationships with colleagues, supervisors and store managers along with those on the corporate level such as District Directors/Managers, Regional Managers, Specialists and Presidents along with Vice Presidents (which is kind of personal to me since my father was Vice President of a major company for 35 years).
…
By speaking at SHRM events hopefully beginning this year, I hope to take that next step in reaching out to major companies and businesses, no matter the size. If you are an SHRM affiliation that is looking for any speakers for your events, don’t be afraid to reach out to me today.
…
Catch you all later!!
