During my time here in Sanibel, I have been thinking about what is known as obsessive compulsive disorder and it’s impacts on people on both sides of the spectrum.

OCD is one of those behaviors that is not wanted by anyone, but its there. When you are dealing with someone who has OCD, you have to ask yourself if OCD is something like autism/neurodiversity? In a way, yes it is. We all want the world around us to be a certain way, however it does not work the way you want it to go.

This holds true with a lot of people. We all have those quirks that make us who we are, which can be a strength, but also a weakness.

Now, this isn’t to say that OCD is a bad thing. Like all wirings in our brains, there is no cure for it and like autism/neurodiversity, we need to have acceptance for it.

Actor and Comedian Howie Mandel

But if you were to try and understand what OCD is and not sure who to turn to, I would strongly look at some well-known celebrities who have OCD like Howie Mandel. Howie has described living with OCD as having a hard time with himself.

In a way, I sometimes have a hard time living with myself as well. As someone who is neurodivergent, I do have a piece of OCD inside of me and as a result, have had past social behaviors that have made my life difficult for myself and others around me.

Another example of someone who has obsessive compulsive disorder and, in a way, Autism/Neurodiversity, is Twilight Sparkle from “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.” Her behaviors of being orderly and not missing any assignments for example, can often times lead to Twilight’s friends being uncomfortable around her.

In fact, Twilight’s most famous episode from her pre-princess days is “Lesson Zero” where she ends up not writing a friendship letter to her mentor and mother figure, Princess Celestia, and spends the bulk of the episode freaking out over it.

As you watch the episode, you will see how Twilight’s OCD can often times get the better of her just as much as others who have OCD as well, like my mother:

Catch you all later!!
