Before I begin Part 2 of this blog, I would like to thank you all for your patience in waiting for this second part. A lot has happened ranging from lack of motivation, to a restructuring of Going the Distance, to a major pirate invasion, all of which I probably won't go into too much detail about but you get the idea.

In fact, these recent events are living proof that Godzilla and King Kong can take on any form and can be represented in any shape or size. These can range from the people who run our country to the inner conflicts between family members. King Kong is someone who craves order, Godzilla is is someone who craves order according to his own will. We see this a lot in the classroom, in the workplace and in everyday life.
However, I want to focus primarily on the workplace for this part of the blog because some neurodivergent employees want to play the role of Godzilla, wanting to get their way and never considering the success of the business they are either applying for or are working for. They want things to beat to their drum and nothing else. The employers or individual's loved ones play the role of King Kong, who want to try and persuade the individual to play the game of the business.
When I was first starting out in my first paid job, I was Godzilla, wanting to stay in my ways and not being open to change. My family and job advisor played the role of King Kong, constantly reminding me that I need to play by the rules of the business.
Recently, I traveled to Jupiter, Florida to attend an employer summit hosted by one of Going the Distance's partners, The Ernie Els Center for Autism. As I attended, I often would think to myself that we do a lot for the neurodivergent population and yet, not all neurodivergent individuals do the same in return.
If I could look back on the summit, I often will think about whether I should have brought up the Godzilla vs King Kong method because it deeply applies to the workplace as much as an educational institution. A job coach or advisor can only do so much and the only thing that they can do is negoitate on your behalf, but they are also teaching you about survival skills both in the workplace and in every day life.

You might recall in Part 1, I discussed how the King Kong vs Godzilla method was a factor in navigating the legal guardianship under my folks. Well, the fact is that King Kong and Godzilla can battle almost anywhere. We see this a lot in several reality shows, particularly "Bar Rescue" with Jon Taffer playing the role of King Kong and the bar owner/staff playing the role of Godzilla. Sometimes, Godzilla will beat King Kong, but most of the time, King Kong beats Godzilla through roaring, confrontation and resolution.
Then there are times when Godzilla will do a double take and go against everything King Kong has taught him or her because they feel they are in the right.

The truth of the matter is that nobody is always going to be in the right. I often reflect this through restructuring of "Going the Distance" because in order to keep the business going, I have to assume the role of King Kong as Dr. Jekyll and take on Mr. Hyde who is in the role of Godzilla. Sometimes, Mr. Hyde prevails and most of the time, Dr. Jekyll prevails. It's never easy, but it's a living example of why I add these two legendary monsters in my trainings.
