Just the other day, I was watching an episode of one of my favorite shows growing up, “E! True Hollywood Story,” about Redd Foxx, a comedian best known as Fred Sanford on the tv series, “Sanford and Son.”
Towards the end of the episode, a section of the episode covered a situation that involved Redd Foxx getting into trouble with the government because he didn’t pay any taxes. As a result, he ended up having all his possessions taken away by the Internal Revenue Services in order to pay for his taxes.
Watching the segment of this “E! True Hollywood Story” got me thinking about something that is touchy, but needs to be addressed sometimes and that is the importance of managing your money. The fact of the matter is that Redd Foxx didn’t care about the importance of paying taxes because it didn’t seem important to him. As a neurodivergent individual, I look at Redd Foxx’s situation and I say to myself that Redd was probably behaving in a way that a neurodivergent individual would that they think they can do whatever they want with their money, which of course, isn’t true.

Now, let’s be real here: sometimes we need to do things we don’t want to do and that includes reporting our earnings to the government. If this was an episode of “Sanford and Son,” Aunt Esther would certainly chew out Fred Sanford for not paying his taxes on time comparing them to not paying his dues to the Lord.
At the same time, Redd should consider himself lucky that he wasn’t imprisoned for tax evasion, which also serves as another learning tool for neurodivergent individuals. People may think that wealth, status and fame will keep you above doing anything that other people need to do and the last thing Neurodivergent Individuals should have a mindset of is having a sense of entitlement.

Special Education teachers should also take note of the story of Redd Foxx considering that this could serve as a good learning tool as part of a life skills class, particularly at the high school level where students are preparing for either college or the workforce. Including Redd Foxx’s tax story can give special education students or neurodivergent individuals as a whole an idea that life involves giving or taking in terms of when it comes to paying bills and taxes.
