Let’s be real here…we are all on this earth for a purpose. For some, it’s to be the leader of a major company or organization. For others, it’s to just get the short end of the stick from others who are entitled. But, when you have achieved a goal, you have it in your mind that you can never part with that goal.

Many of us who are neurodiverse/disabled are often unwilling to face reality and we end up being in denial about it. Sometimes, we want to throw an imaginary roof over our heads and pretend that what we are experiencing isn’t true.

We tend to see this a lot in the workplace and, most recently, in sports as Tom Brady is refusing to retire and admit that he is done with football. As you recall, Brady announced at the start of this year that he was retiring only to pull a “Jesus Christ Spent 40 Days in the Desert” and come out of retirement.

It’s important that when we are in denial about something, we have to face it with dignity and acceptance. Some people may tell us that we have to give up doing something that we love or pleasure for our own overall good. In the case of Tom Brady, he’s probably in one of three scenarios:

A. He knows he is getting to the point of retirement, but doesn’t want to believe it.

B. He is worried what will happen when he does ultimately decide to hang up the cleats.

C. He will go out of his way to protect whatever records he has that may one day be broken.

If you think that all three of these choices are what we go through when we are in denial, then you are right. It doesn’t matter whether we are neurodiverse/disabled or not, if we have to walk away from something that is otherwise unhealthy for us or someone has found that we might enjoy something better.

Ultimately, it’s up to us to decide whether or not we have to throw in the towel before we get too old to the point that our minds and bodies cannot take it anymore.

In Part 2 of this blog, you will see what I mean from one of the greatest men in our history.

Catch you all later!!
