This week, I flew Delta Airlines down to Boca Raton, FL for my book signing of “This is Autism” at Unicorn Children’s Foundation and it got me thinking about something: a lot of neurodiverse individuals or anyone for that matter, struggle with the idea of embracing customer service.
Let’s face it though, customers can be difficult to deal with at times and we sometimes forget that a little can go a long way. This is often true in the aviation industry and when it comes to Delta Airlines, they are the current champions of customer service, at least from what I saw this week.
…
For one thing, the Delta staff try to keep a positive outlook on whatever situation occurs whether its a delay or any other kind of issue. This week, my outbound flight from Providence to Detroit was delayed by 4 hours and while I had the opportunity to sleep in and arrive later, there were others that didn’t know about the delay and ended up staying in the airport for 4 hours.
The gate agent in Providence did a good job in trying to keep those waiting entertained and had the opportunity to even build bridges with three wheelchair bound passengers.
Of course, I was originally scheduled to fly into West Palm Beach, but that didn’t matter to me at all and I ended up flying into Fort Lauderdale via Detroit instead.
…
The whole point of the matter is that Delta Airlines is among the best in customer service, but it all depends on the individuals that they hire, which includes neurodiverse individuals. There are a lot of us neurodiverse folk that work retail or customer service jobs and we have to teach ourselves to work around them.
If it’s possible, I would strongly recommend flying Delta Airlines at least once to get some inspiration on how customer service is done. Plus, I admire the overhead train at their Detroit hub, which is also an added bonus for those working in the Detroit, MI area.
…
Catch you all later!!
